headshotJudy Gelles received an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991. Gelles has published three books: When We Were Ten and Florida Family Portrait with the Visual Studies Workshop; and Beach Boxes with Nazraeli Press. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including a 2007-2008 Fleisher Challenge Artist grant, Philadelphia; an Individual Artist grant from the Rhode Island State Council On The Arts; an Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts Grant, Philadelphia; a Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation “Artist As Catalyst” grant, and a grant from WYBE Public Television, Philadelphia, Stories New Program Grant. Gelles has held artist residencies at the MacDowell Colony, the Visual Studies Workshop, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Her work has been featured in Ms. Magazine; Vision Magazine, Beijing, China; Camerawork; New Art Examiner; Artweek and Photography Now.

Judy Gelles’ work has been exhibited around the world and is in several private and public collections including, the Akron Art Museum, the Dayton Art Institute; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles; the Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona Beach, FL; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
