In 1979, when Tucson's art gallery scene was in its infancy, local artists had to scramble to find places to exhibit their work. So when Tucson attorney Debra Hillary offered to share her office space in the downtown Dinnerware building, 13 artists jumped at the chance to show their art there. They founded the Dinnerware Artists' Cooperative Gallery (later the Dinnerware Contemporary Art Gallery), a nonprofit organization that became a pillar of Tucson's arts community.
The first gallery space at 245 E. Congress St. was initially a restaurant supply retail store. The name DINNERWARE was already on the building, hence, Dinnerware Artists' Cooperative was born.
