|Art + Design:
For the first exhibition of the 2009-2010 season, Etherton Gallery inaugurates a unique exhibition concept, ART+DESIGN: etherton invites, uniting art and design in one space, to highlight the diversity and elegance of contemporary design in Tucson. The exhibition is a collaboration among nationally known designers and artists including Stephen Paul of Arroyo Design; Scott Baker of BAKER+HESSELDENZ design; Tom Philabaum of Philabaum Glass Studio & Gallery; David Adler of David E. Adler, Inc. of Scottsdale; with large scale canvases by Nancy Tokar Miller and Jim Waid, and photographs by Judy Gelles.
Highlights of the exhibition include Stephen Paul’s and Tom Philabaum’s new line of lighting fixtures; Paul’s historically influenced mesquite furniture; sleek and hi-tech walnut furniture and shelving by Scott Baker; hand blown glass by Tom Philabaum; and contemporary Tibetan rugs collected by David Adler. All are previewing new work and carpets not seen before in Tucson. Paintings by Nancy Tokar Miller influenced by travel to Asia, North Africa and Spain, and Jim Waid, who mines the Sonoran desert for his large and even monumental works, accentuate the sculptural qualities of the designers’ furniture. Judy Gelles’ photographs of brightly painted Australian beach cabanas from the Beach Boxes series complement the architectural focus of the exhibition.
This kind of collaboration is exactly what owner Terry Etherton had in mind when he began to formulate the idea of the exhibition. “There is such tremendous talent in Arizona, and so many of us have common interests and goals but don’t take the opportunity to work together to promote the award winning art and design scene here. I wanted to create that opportunity.”
The exhibition opens September 12 and runs through November 28, 2009. An artist reception will be held Saturday, September 12, from 7pm to 10pm at Etherton Gallery. Etherton Gallery is located at 135 S. 6th Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85701. Regular business hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11am – 5pm and Thursday, 11am –7pm and by appointment.
